sponsored by INNER-WHEEL Club of Dhaka North West
A devastating flash flood hit the northeastern districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj in Bangladesh. Prolonged heavy rains in northeastern India have affected more than two million of his people living on the banks of Bangladesh’s Surma Kushiyala river. Many counties of Kanaighat, Gowainghat, Companyganj, Jaintapur, Zakiganj, Sylhet Sadar, Fenchuganj, and Sylhet as well as some counties of the Sunamganj and Netrokona districts were flooded. Heavy rains starting Wednesday 11 May 2022 exacerbated the flood scenario. More than 300 villages and roads in Companiganj in Sylhet, Gowainghat, and Upazilas in Jaintapur were flooded. 42 emergency shelters for flood victims have been opened in Gowainhat. Meanwhile, water from the Surma River seeped into buildings and businesses in the district. All road connections in Gowainghat Upazila have been interrupted. About 90% of the Upazila residents were stranded. MASTUL has many years of experience, especially in flood and post-flood emergencies and disaster management. Based on years of experience, especially in relief distribution, MASTUL dispatched an emergency response team to initiate an emergency food distribution in the affected area of Sylhet, Bangladesh.
