Emergency Rehabilitation Program-2022 for Flood-Prone People in Sylhet

sponsored by INNER-WHEEL Club of Dhaka North West

OVERVIEW

A devastating flash flood hit the northeastern districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj in Bangladesh. Prolonged heavy rains in northeastern India have affected more than two million of his people living on the banks of Bangladesh’s Surma Kushiyala river. Many counties of Kanaighat, Gowainghat, Companyganj, Jaintapur, Zakiganj, Sylhet Sadar, Fenchuganj, and Sylhet as well as some counties of the Sunamganj and Netrokona districts were flooded. Heavy rains starting Wednesday 11 May 2022 exacerbated the flood scenario. More than 300 villages and roads in Companiganj in Sylhet, Gowainghat, and Upazilas in Jaintapur were flooded. 42 emergency shelters for flood victims have been opened in Gowainhat. Meanwhile, water from the Surma River seeped into buildings and businesses in the district. All road connections in Gowainghat Upazila have been interrupted. About 90% of the Upazila residents were stranded. MASTUL has many years of experience, especially in flood and post-flood emergencies and disaster management. Based on years of experience, especially in relief distribution, MASTUL dispatched an emergency response team to initiate an emergency food distribution in the affected area of Sylhet, Bangladesh. After several days of work, MASTUL, in consultation with local administrations, selected specific areas for more intensive work with flood victims.

MASTUL Foundation has taken the initiative to empower 2,000 people to rebuild 1,000 homes destroyed by floods in the Sylhet region through their post-disaster management project named “Emergency Flood Damage Rehabilitation and Livelihoods for Flood Victims in Sylhet Region”. On Wednesday 27th July 2022, MASTUL Foundation’s post-disaster management project of Emergency Flood Damage Rehabilitation has officially begun at the South Sunamganj Upazila office by supporting with materials to build houses for half a hundred families affected by the floods.

The Inner Wheel Club of Dhaka North West has always stood by the MUSTUL Foundation by using its funds for emergency relief programs and other risk management initiatives. The MASTUL Foundation has provided massive flood relief to thousands of flood victims with the help of the INNER-WHEEL Club. INNER-WHEEL provided MASTUL with the financial support to rebuild damaged houses in flood-affected communities in the Sylhet region during this post-disaster period.
